16. Dead Boy Detectives, 2024

	
Dead Boy Detectives is as light fun as it sounds, but breezy it is not. Its case of the episode formula has fun, at times absurd premises that leads to satisfying conclusions, which makes it feel like a vibrant teen cartoon series. But so much of an episode is banter in the form of bloated dialogue that can go in one ear and quickly out the other. It's colorful, cute, and quirky at times, and it's easy to root for its energetic bits and seamless tying of threads; but all in all, watching one episode after another, it can feel unnecessarily dragged out for the kind of light mystery show that it is.Genre: Drama, Mystery, Sci-Fi & Fantasy

17. The Flight Attendant, 2022

Cassie Bowen (Kaley Cuoco) is a hot mess. She’s flirty, flighty, and constantly blackout drunk, so when she wakes up one day to find a dead man next to her, it’s not entirely beyond the realm of possibility that she's responsible for it. But as Cassie uncovers new memories over time, it gets harder and harder to track the truth. Is she a murder suspect or a frame-up victim?

That’s what Cassie sets out to solve, but with the FBI and multiple hitmen on her tail, not to mention bouts of alcoholism and PTSD getting in the way, it’s up to her to figure things out on her own before it’s too late.

To be sure, The Flight Attendant is a well-crafted thriller, with rousing music and noir-like editing adding to the classic whodunnit experience. But it’s also refreshingly not that serious. The performances are big and loud and self-ridicule often drives the characters’ dialogue. What makes The Flight Attendant stand out from its darker counterparts is that it has a sense of humor about itself, which makes it all the more engaging to watch. It's pulpy good fun, and it knows it.

18. The Peripheral, 2022

Set in 2032, The Peripheral finds a protagonist in Flynne Fisher (Chloe Grace Moretz), a cash-strapped but ambitious woman who gets stuck between alternate timelines and realities after testing out an experimental gaming device. She stays for the money and safety promised to her, but quickly finds out that she’s getting more than what she bargained for in this twisty, action-packed thriller.

The Peripheral is worth a try if you enjoyed HBO’s Westworld (whose creators also serve as producers in this show), or if you’re just generally intrigued by all thing tech and sci-fi. The world-building is complex, sometimes to the point of confusion, but Moretz is a pro at grounding scenes and making sure she brings us along on the ride. If you’re looking to get lost in a realm at once real and unreal, then this show could be for you.

19. Shrill, 2021

It's no fun being plus-sized—or at least, that's the message that we get everywhere, from tragic documentaries to self-help articles to shows that make weight the butt of every joke. Fat people are often perceived as inactive and sad and stubborn when those aren't mutually exclusive with one's size. In fact, there's nothing inherently wrong with being big.

In Shrill, our plus-sized hero Annie (played by the lovable Aidy Bryant) knocks down all those lazy myths with her sharp wit and buoyant charm. She goes on everyday adventures that prove she can be just as delightful (and exasperating) as any witty millennial writer trying to make it big in her city. Annie isn't perfect, but the fun lies in seeing her grow (not transform) into a better person.

20. Bad Monkey, 2024

	
You’d think a caper set in Florida starring Vince Vaughn would be wild, but Bad Monkey is surprisingly chill. The stakes are low, the mystery is revealed quite early, and everyone moves at a languid pace that feels right for the summer season. And yet it’s still fun to watch. It has the right amount of intrigue and it looks enviably nice. Half the time you’ll just be wishing you too could sit back and down a beer while watching the warm Florida waves rock by. Admittedly, the plot lines don’t always mesh and Vaughn could be more dynamic in his performance, but overall, this makes for a perfectly fine summer watch.Genre: Comedy, Crime

Bookie’s very premise is funny: it follows old-school bookmakers Danny (Sebastian Maniscalco) and Ray (Omar Dorsey) as they manage bets via phone calls and actual visits to their clients’ (swanky) whereabouts. They have to do all this the hard way because, in Los Angeles, gambling has yet to be legalized, so the sneaking around makes for an entertaining watch. In true sitcom fashion, their increasing bad luck equals more zany misadventures, but there’s a grimness and darkness to it too as Bookie explores the struggles of Danny and Ray’s paycheck-to-paycheck living. They feel like real people, people you can bet on to have a good time.Genre: Comedy

22. The Big Cigar, 2024

As a heist story, The Big Cigar is a fast-paced caper that’s easy on the eyes. It’s slickly edited and richly designed, and the actors turn in exciting performances that make you want to tune in. But as a biopic of a complex man, The Big Cigar is confounding at best and frustrating at worst. It zips through many things that Newton publicly struggled with, including drug addiction and the very allegation that caused him to flee to Cuba in the first place. Though it brings up important discussions about revolutionary struggle and emancipation, it’s ultimately more interested in the heist itself, which while admittedly engaging, feels less urgent than the events surrounding Newton’s real life.
