It would be unfair to demand the same things out of The Continental that the John Wick film series already does so well. And this three-episode prequel definitely works as its own animal; even if you haven't seen those increasingly elaborate Keanu Reeves movies, this miniseries easily finds a whole group of sympathetic characters worth rooting for and builds to a series of exciting set pieces full of personality and excellent choreography. The groundedness of The Continental's ensemble of heroes emerging from the seedy streets of this fictionalized 1970s New York works surprisingly well against the arrogance of the show's villains. And the world they all inhabit is rendered just as slickly as in the films.
But in its search for an identity of its own, The Continental becomes a reminder for why the John Wick movies work so well—and why this series just can't capture the same spark. Those are simple, primal movies that contrast Reeves' stoic, mythic protagonist against a bizarre world of colorful enemies. The Continental, in contrast, borrows from many hardboiled crime dramas but never actually provides any insight into the systems or rules that govern all the factions involved. Individual characters may achieve their goals by the end, but it's ultimately hard to see how they add to the grander ideas of revenge and redemption at play.

Many telenovelas involve unresolved parentage, and Pact of Silence is no different. However, unlike other orphans, the child in this Mexican series is now out for revenge. Through 18 episodes, social media influencer Brenda hopes to take revenge on the mother who abandoned her, and the three friends that helped her. The show is fast paced, both through Brenda’s present investigation and through the flashbacks of the people she’s suspecting, yet it still manages to keep up the suspense with its twists and turns. However, it seems like the show is more interested in learning more about the privileged women, rather than in the struggle Brenda has gone through. While the show tries to uncover the mystery of Brenda’s parents, it’s hard to say whether or not the show will delve deep into Brenda, and actually tackle why she wants to go through revenge.

Based on the first three episodes watched for this review, Club Hooligans (titled onscreen as Barrabrava) is at its best when it illustrates how disorganized the gang at the center of the narrative really is, especially when their leader's position is threatened. This inherent lack of loyalty and structure contrasts nicely with the stricter culture of family obligation for its lead characters—even though the gang is still where these men find greater meaning. Unfortunately, the show can't quite build as strong a sense of urgency as it thinks, with far too little development happening for both plot and character in the first three episodes. And while the series clearly has production value to spare, its overly familiar gritty style ultimately does Club Hooligans no favors, as it struggles to come up with its own voice and identity.

Chastity High is a lovely concept to begin with, from its basic premise to its episode titles being so unapologetically saccharine. Once you do see an episode and get a feel for characters that are childlike/childish in presentation mixing it up in these adult scenes, it can be tonally confusing who the show’s audience is. Those two extremes aside, the show does present a good mix of money drama and teen drama on the journey back to the flash forward prologue, and overall feels like a light, easy watch with enough storylines to potentially keep you hooked for multiple episodes.

It starts off rather plain and descriptive, almost like a Wikipedia article in documentary form with how unremarkable it is. While it maintains that bare minimalism throughout, the aggravating sadness begins to seep in as stories get a little more personal, ages get a little younger, and the list of transgressions starts getting longer. You can’t help but feel for these women and their families who are very much trapped or used by this exploitative “agency” and threatened by other dangerous circles. If you can stomach keeping it going, it’s tragic and disgusting in the most barebones and straightforward way.

Attempting to be both a serious, well-researched documentary and a serious, hard-hitting drama is nothing new. Many shows on educational channels like History have long employed skilled actors and directors to elevate their reenactments. But Netflix’s Alexander: The Making of a God doesn’t seem to know where (or when) to draw the line. There is no tonal balance, no tasteful blending of the two; instead, drama and docu are smushed into one incoherent mess. And that’s a shame because, on their own, they could have been worthwhile. The production value and acting that goes into the drama have enough heft to carry it through, while the history and research (though not the strongest) are engaging enough to whet our appetite for learning more. But as they stand, these mixed genres only distract us from appreciating either.

Agent Elvis is the latest reimagining of the King, this time as a cool and collected James Bond-esque spy in a 60s neon-lit world. The adult animation series takes fun and unserious turns, in 1960s world history and also in Elvis’ life. The show turns faulty on-stage shows into recollecting spy trauma, poor film performances into body doubles that step in during his missions, and pins known financial troubles to a cartoon monkey. It’s an interesting approach from co-creators John Eddie and ex-wife Priscilla, along with some cool animated sequences. It would have been successful in reimagining Elvis at his best, if the comedy was funny enough to match.

As impressive as Vasco Rossi’s life was, it’s hard to connect to someone you haven’t heard of, which is probably why this docuseries is best seen by die-hard music fans alone. The series takes its time to introduce Rossi and explain his impact on Italian music, but even then, it can seem like something you’ve seen before. The documentary shies away from the cultural specificities and nuances that make Rossi the singular musician that he is, attempting instead to generalize his life into clear-cut sections as if it were a book. Even with Rossi present and narrating many parts of the series, it still lacks the ruggedness and spikiness that made Rossi’s music burst with relevance in the late 20th century. There is a sense that the filmmakers created this series with an international audience in mind, but by making his story as general and universal as possible, they might have inadvertently diluted Rossi’s power.

Starting off as the 24th(!) overall season of this long-running TV franchise at the time of its release, The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon understandably treads very familiar ground: general paranoia and distrust, humanity divided into survivalist factions, a search for a cure. In its early episodes, though, this series gets a boost from its uniquely historical setting—which creates a feeling of these characters stuck in a previous century—as well as a strong focus on religious faith in the time of the apocalypse. Still, this spin-off continues to go through the same action-horror motions, sticking to what's expected at the expense of any suspense or meaningful development for its stoic title character.

Neon's story of young millennials hustling to make their dreams come true can feel familiar, and it might approach some of its conflicts too lightly for its own good (at least in the first couple episodes watched for this review). But even if it isn't exactly raucously funny yet, it's got a cool, confident foundation of charming characters and fun music to make the episodes go down smooth. Much of the comedy here comes from these people faking it till they hopefully make it, until it becomes plainly obvious that entire industries really do operate on lots of coordinated luck and loophole exploitation. Again, it might not be the most novel insight, but it's delivered here in a stylish way.
