An Australian movie, about a teenage boy and the girl he chose not to attend the high school dance with. Brent (our protagonist) is a troubled sort of guy who has recently lost his father, and after declining Lola's offer to take her to the dance he finds himself kidnapped, and tied to a chair in her house. With the help of her 'Daddy', she then proceeds to preform any number of weird, cruel and sexual acts on him. This movie is primarily a torture flick, but it has a few stomach churning plot twists beyond the usual gore and cringe inducting stuff and definitely, there is no torture flick out there quite like this. The actress who plays Lola plays 'crazy' perfectly, and in a sick way the desperation that she gives off throughout the whole film kind of makes you feel sorry for her in her impossible quest to find her prince charming. The creepy incestuous undertones really makes this movie uncomfortable to watch at times as well. Overall, The Loved Ones is a pretty solid watch. Not scary so much as extremely discomforting, it's great for anyone who cant handle jump scares or supernatural horror.

2. Green Room, 2015

This is the follow-up film by the director of the (also) excellent and intense Blue Ruin. Like that film, Green Room often subverts genre expectations. The basic premise: a lefty punk band winds up taking a show at a skinhead club because they are desperate for cash. The show goes well, but afterward the band accidentally witnesses something they shouldn’t have and are trapped in the club’s green room. This film is brutal and intense, especially because you actually care about what happens to the characters. Bonus: Sir Patrick Stewart plays the leader of the skinhead organization, and gives a subtle yet effectively sinister performance. While some truly horrific acts of violence occur (especially in the back-half of the film) they really do serve the story. Still, there are a handful of scenes that may require more sensitive viewers to cover their eyes. You have been warned.

A cracking cast including Guy Pearce and Joel Edgerton elevate this dark and gripping Australian crime drama, which was received with glowing reviews from critics but was sadly forgotten with time.

Breakout star James Frecheville plays J, a teenager who goes to live with his grandmother, the head of a Melbourne crime organization. As the heat closes in and things go awry, J finds himself caught between his family and a detective who wants to save him.

Jacki Weaver is outstanding as the conniving grandma and the film put Ben Mendelsohn on the road to Hollywood stardom. Animal Kingdom is a superior crime saga with plenty of emotional depth to match the tense drama.

Definitely a film you will either love or hate, Sightseers is an extremely dark comedy on the verge of being a horror movie. And it's British, with many elements of deep British culture. A couple go on their dream road trip in the countryside to suddenly find themselves killing strangers. Sightseers will feel almost like a very British version of True Romance.
