Despite featuring a sharp script and solid performances, Party Down struggled to rake in views when it premiered in 2009, and sadly had to quit after just two seasons in. But since then, its small cast had gone on to become TV luminaries and its sardonic humor garnered newfound appreciation among the younger crowd. Even the show’s hustle culture premise, which was quite novel then, can be found in almost every show now.

So it’s not a stretch to call Party Down a pioneering comedy. It’s simple and efficient, with each episode taking place at a different event, but it’s also deeply funny and keenly aware of the ironies and hypocrisies of the industry it’s a part of. People, myself included, were afraid that it might lose some of its underdog edge when it was rebooted in 2023, but rest assured, it remains as knife-sharp and hilarious as ever.

Though it may seem like it at first, Lockwood & Co. is more than just Ghostbusters by way of YA fiction. For one, it is properly terrifying. The growls and screeches, the misshapen ghosts and the heartstopping jumpscares are all proof that the showrunners know what it takes to create an authentic horror series. The worldbuilding is also impressive; the show rightly doesn't dump all its secrets in one go and instead reveals them slowly and naturally, which adds to its credibility.

In lesser hands, Lockwood & Co. might have ended up as cheesy child's fare, but with a skilled cast and crew behind it, it proves to be stirring for audiences of any age. The impressive CGI and costume design give it a prestigious sheen (it’s not tacky, in other words), while the tender moments make it as relatable as any well-told teen drama.

I rented this a few years back because of Ryan Gosling - he had just blown me away in Fracture so I was trying to catch up on his other movies. It was an unexpected gem. One of the sweetest movies I have ever seen - it was kind of like a fairy tale. With a blow-up doll. Yes, that's right.

The school setting, the tense rivalry, and the years spent apart are familiar tropes, even for heterosexual coming-of-age dramas, though the added dimension of Teh’s Chinese Thai background is new. That being said, it doesn’t hold up the series alone. I Told Sunset About You gets specific, and in delving deep into Teh and Oh-aew’s characters, it’s clear how heartfelt and genuine the show is in depicting its story. There are moments that can be cheesy, but with the sweet way the show depicts these tender teenage years, it’s no wonder I Told Sunset About You easily reminds queer people about their own experiences in navigating these feelings.Genre: Drama

Best known for its cute characters, Sanrio has partnered with Netflix to deliver a children’s adventure mini-series centered on their laziest egg yolk Gudetama. If you’d like to know how an egg like Gudetama can exist, this show conceives of a world where once out of their shells, all eggs have sentience, from regular chicken eggs, to eggs of other species, and to various forms of egg dishes like omelets and flans. While it’s slightly horrific to imagine eating these kawaii creatures, the show embraces the absurdity of its premise, depending heavily on food-based puns, as well as contemplating the purpose of raw eggs. This show may not be to everyone’s taste, but it’s certainly one of a kind, and short and sweet enough to swallow.

First released in 1998, HBO’s From the Earth to the Moon is a fittingly epic series that captures the magnitude of NASA’s missions to the moon. It’s equally informative and dramatic, featuring more real-life characters than you can track and more information than you can sometimes process. Thankfully, Tom Hanks appears at the start of every episode to brief you through the events, and archival footages are smoothly inserted when they’re needed. In the first two hours alone, there are spectacular space flights (with finely aged CGI, mind you) and heated courtroom debates, with each episode operating more like a standalone film than a TV episode. The only downside comes in retrospect: when you’ve seen films like the devastating First Man (about the struggles of Neil Armstrong) and the revelatory Space Race (about the many achievements of neglected Black astronauts), it’s not hard to imagine a version of this series that’s less celebratory and patriotic, and more critical and true to life.Genre: Action & Adventure, Drama

There’s something about this series, in all its minimalist and intimate glory, that makes it feel like there’s an otherworldly method for making Pixar/Disney level animations. It feels warm and encouraging, as delicate music and matching film footage plays through the guide, and the artist periodically shares their unique drawing journey. Even if you don’t watch it for the art guide, it’s just as pleasant listening to them talk about their life stories and what they’re passionate about. Each episode is generally as open and warm as the person talking, and the format perhaps isn’t the most engaging for most kids, but like the best Pixar films, it’ll feel like a little hug.

Dead Boy Detectives is as light fun as it sounds, but breezy it is not. Its case of the episode formula has fun, at times absurd premises that leads to satisfying conclusions, which makes it feel like a vibrant teen cartoon series. But so much of an episode is banter in the form of bloated dialogue that can go in one ear and quickly out the other. It's colorful, cute, and quirky at times, and it's easy to root for its energetic bits and seamless tying of threads; but all in all, watching one episode after another, it can feel unnecessarily dragged out for the kind of light mystery show that it is.Genre: Drama, Mystery, Sci-Fi & Fantasy

If you're a fan of dialogue-driven, single-setting shows, this series is perfect for you. It revolves entirely around suspect interrogations and dynamics between detectives, which lead to 3 "storylines" per episode: (1) whether the suspect is guilty or not, (2) the characterization of the suspects, and, (3) the characterization of the detectives. The third storyline might be necessary to push the series up an extra notch, but it's easily the least interesting part of the series. The show creates tension layer by layer, and it has a way of keeping its premise fresh each time; I'm not sure that this is a format you want to binge. But it's also 3-4 episodes a season, so you might as well?Genre: Crime, Drama

Big City Greens is simultaneously loud and laid-back, perfectly in line with its premise. At the heart of it is a healthy family dynamic (the father-son relationship in particular stands out), but it has enough organic tension to invest in beyond the laughs. On that end, its self-aware jokes can be universally funny for kids and grown-ups, and their timing of punchlines is pretty on point. Of course, some episodes have more to them than others; but all things considered, it’s not some empty-headed cartoon, it’s got satisfying resolutions, and the songs are always a welcome treat. Ultimately, a great direction for kids’ comedy adventures to take.

Apart from Maitlis, we’re also privy to His Royal Highness’ point of view, which is a mix privileged naivitie, paternal sweetness, and dumb lust. Compared to Netflix’s Scoop, which is more interested in the BBC booker Sam McAlister’s POV, Amazon Prime’s A Very Royal Scandal is by nature deeper and more explorative. It’s also more exciting and less salacious in tone. Paired with a suspenseful score, smart editing, and rich backdrops, the series is a near-masterclass on how to make treaded ground feel fresh again.Genre: Drama

With the extra long title, 7th Time Loop (shortened for length) seemed like a generic royalty romance, with reincarnation used only as a means of skills acquisition. The story is practically that, but there’s something interesting about the way Rishe uses these skills (and the way these skills are written). While today’s women have more freedoms, there is still some discouragement towards pursuits outside of childbearing, with some hoping for a “lazy” domestic life, despite the statistics showing the home being the most dangerous place for women. 7th Time Loop acknowledges that danger– with Arnold being Rishe’s killer in her past life– while also acknowledging the importance of Rishe’s supposedly lazy domestic duties, like household administration, resource management, and education. The show values feminine skills as a means to avoid war, while also valuing women’s self-determination, and creating a tense enemies-to-lovers romance with organic stakes.Genre: Animation, Drama, Sci-Fi & Fantasy
