When a group of percussionists illegally carry out a city-wide performance act, it's up to policeman Amadeus Warnebring to stop them. The musical fugitives perform on stolen objects and disrupt public spaces, but Warnebring has his own reasons to pursue them so determinedly: he's tone-deaf for one and born into a family of snobby musical geniuses for another, making this case all the more meaningful and consequential to him.

Sound of Noise is more than reminiscent of Stomp, what with its playful symphonies subsisting on random borrowed objects, but it is livened up with the suspense of a caper, the dry wit of a Swedish comedy, and the abundant charms of a light romance.

It's all fun and games until Melissa and Josh learn they cannot leave Schmigadoon until they find true love. Shocked to know that they aren't each other's one true pair, they then journey to find the people they're meant to be with before it's too late.

From its borrowed Broadway casting (present are Kristin Chenoweth and Ariana DeBose) down to its perfectly choreographed performances, Schmigadoon! is a clear ode to musical theater, and its unabashed appreciation for the genre is truly hard to resist. Even the most musically averse will find something to love in the show. If the theatrics and eye-popping visuals don't do it for you, then stay for the breezy six-episode run, the great lead chemistry, and the wry, exacting humor.

Genderbending isn’t a completely foreign trope for Western audiences, but it’s rare to see the shenanigans that happen in Ranma ½, which takes a genderbending water curse to form a complicated web of relationships, that starts out as a casual romance comedy (albeit with plenty of kicks) and eventually evolves into a ridiculous fighting fantasy adventure. It’s rather revolutionary for its time, in part due to Ranma’s queer gender, but also due to its precursor of the harem trope, as well as its then-new take on the tsundere in Ranma’s intended fiancée Akane Tendo. It’s also actually possible, with real life conglomerates actually having a similar story. Queen of Tears shows a different side to this modern-day fairytale, as the riches that come with the marriage also come with being controlled, in part by the media that surrounds them and the family whose strict, but strategic moves lead to their rise. Because of this heavy central idea, it’s no wonder the show tries to aim for a more lighthearted tone with some jabs at the ridiculous lifestyle enabled by the wealth of the Queens Group Hong family, and the cast are game to play, but in prioritizing the humor, the series sometimes makes light of certain difficulties that should be given the weight it deserves. Still, Queen of Tears is fairly entertaining, and fans of the leads would like seeing the funny dynamic they share.Genre: Comedy, Drama, Family

It takes a while to adjust to the unevenness of No Good Deed, especially if you’re not familiar with director Liz Feldman’s previous work (another Netflix show, Dead to Me). But once you get used to its darkly comic tone, No Good Deed proves to be an engaging and layered ensemble show. We follow multiple couples with their own secrets and relatable relationship woes. One is grieving a lost child, the other is navigating an affair, and two others are expecting children. What ties them all together is their desire to own a specific house in Los Feliz; a house that bore witness to a mysterious and violent crime scene that will keep you hanging till the final episode. It’s gripping that way, and at 30 minutes per episode, it also makes for an easy binge.Genre: Comedy, Drama

Greta Gerwig (Lady Bird, Frances Ha) and Noah Baumbach (The Squid and the Whale, also Frances Ha) write the story, while Gerwig plays a lead role. Two girls, one a New Yorker and the other having just arrived in New York for a writing program, get in touch because their parents will marry. The writer is fascinated by the personality of the New Yorker and follows her everywhere to understand her more, and eventually write about her. Mistress America is their journey through friendship and through New York. Stick around the first 40 minutes or so, because the second half of this 82-minute movie is hilarious.Genre: Comedy, Drama

The death of the matriarch is, of course, sad, but the countryside wake of May Fools seems to be the opposite at first. Just before the heat of summer, the family reunion seems quaint, idyllic, and occasionally eccentric with Milou’s penchant for beekeeping and crayfish catching. The inevitable family squabble over the estate also gets humorous, and this all seems unimportant to the larger May 68 protests that threatened to escalate into civil war. But director Louis Malle finds the small personal changes of Milou’s family and presents them, not as more or less important, but genuine all the same, finding the humanity within each of these characters.Genre: Comedy, Drama

Sometimes, especially when you’ve gone without it for so long, you would do anything for a shred of respect. LaRoy, Texas depicts exactly that, with a store owner Ray being so unwilling to stand up for himself that his wife cheats on him with his brother, who steals from the family business. It's a terrible situation to be in, of course, but it's played out in a dry, comedic way, as detective-wannabe Skip pokes on the wound when trying his best to solve the case, and as each surprise reveals how terribly incompetent the small town deals with things. While it doesn't quite compare to the neo-Westerns of Coen brothers it’s inspired by, LaRoy, Texas is both fun and tragic, and a promising debut for writer-director Shane Atkinson.Genre: Comedy, Crime, Thriller
