The latest installment of Ly Hai’s Face Off franchise has an entertaining premise with some terrible plot twists. With this premise, it’s almost expected to see the worst of the worst of people when given a jackpot, and it’s easy to feel distraught when this happens, because the initial dynamic between the six friends feels genuine. However, the fun and wacky hijinks devolve into seriously messed up plot twists. Some of these work, but certain scenes feel like it was just added for shock value at the expense of other characters. The film couldn’t choose between vilifying some characters and celebrating their friendship. Because of this, Face Off 6 feels like it missed its mark.

It starts out easy and compelling enough, in the middle of a crime scene with a naked dead girl on the shore. But easy and compelling this refuses to be. The film seems to be a slow, painful look at the process of capturing a perpetrator, a detective’s effort to profile a killer. But it threw a lot more at the wall hoping a lot more would stick. The nonlinear storytelling spices up the action, but it just feels like the base story needed all the help it could get. If you do stick with the movie, you’ll see some gory details, some twists, and an unnecessarily complex story.

You don't need to have watched the first Code 8 (released in 2019) to enjoy Part II, which speaks to how this sequel has improved as a piece of sci-fi entertainment—but also hasn't done anything particularly interesting with its characters or themes. At the end of the day this really isn't all that different from so many other attempts at making a "gritty" superhero property, ending up as yet another crime drama that lacks personality for its characters or imagination in the way that its thrills are executed. With a title as generic as Bandidos, the series is set up exactly how you'd expect: a charming group of antiheroes and weirdos somehow coming together and pulling off improbable schemes while cracking jokes and flirting with each other. There's a reason this formula works, of course, and the show's charismatic cast helps greatly in making this a smooth watch—especially during set pieces that almost always end in narrow escapes. But the series also isn't able to inject enough of its own personality into the story (at least in the first two episodes watched for this review), which when coupled with obligatory, forced romance and uncomfortable jokes constantly made towards a minor, only causes Bandidos to fade into the already oversaturated realm of heist shows and movies with the exact same attitude.Genre: Action & Adventure, Comedy, Crime, Drama

In the sea of mommy-horror films, Run Rabbit Run would float somewhere in the middle. Despite Sarah Snook's imposing commitment to playing a mother haunted by her past, the story doesn't meet her halfway with a memorable script. The dynamic between mother and daughter gets stuck in an exhausting loop of sudden bursts of anger and angst followed by glaringly quick reconciliation. Twists and scares are present as Snook's character, also named Sarah, confronts the dark and disturbing truths of her past, but it feels more mandatory than useful. The potential for transforming gripping familial tension into horror is lost in a meandering mother/daughter fight.

Despite a wealth of first-hand accounts, it’s hard to be on board Encounters’ premise. It lacks the hard evidence, credible sources, and science-backed data to be taken seriously. The closest we get to a fact-checker is Sara, a local newspaper editor who refuses to buy into the story in episode one. It’s full-on speculation presented as fact, making it seem more silly than smart. To be fair, the testimonies seem sincere, if a bit misguided, and there’s something to be said about their commitment to their truth. The docuseries is also sleekly made, which gives it an appearance of authority. Ultimately, however, the show’s scant facts and unsubstantial proof do those high points a disservice.

Children's TV doesn't always require a great story, nor does it need to break free from a repetitive pattern to be good. But there's still a difference between an episodic kids' show that places its focus on learning and good morals first, and one that's blatantly designed to generate interest in purchasing physical toys. It feels like so much of Hot Wheels Let's Race is spent showing off different models of cars, explaining their special abilities, and presenting various tracks on which they can race, that any moral lessons they do shoehorn in barely make a dent in the grand scheme of things. And the show's characters aren't endearing enough or fun enough to make up for it, despite the admittedly kinetic racing scenes.Genre: Action & Adventure, Animation, Kids
