Young love, gunslinging, and the players of an opium ring open the first episode of the Indian comedy-crime-thriller, Guns & Gulaabs. The show alternates between scenes of serious crime, gruesome murder, love confessions, and comedic bits, which all blend surprisingly well. It also employs various quirks, including movie soundtrack references and fast-paced action scenes, that strengthen its 90s worldbuilding. And the multiple storylines quickly allude to each other in the first two episodes, allowing them all to progress without any lag. With its deft balance of crime and comedy, Guns & Gulaabs begins with a bang and a chuckle that's hard to turn away from.

2. Big City Greens the Movie: Spacecation, 2024

If you’ve never watched the series prior to this, it still has a lot going for it. For one, its exposition is straightforward like a children’s play, telling you who the main cast is, and quickly treating you to musical numbers that are a welcome surprise every time they pop up. The main predicament is hilarious when it first hits, but I’m willing to die on the hill that they could’ve kept the bit going a little longer. Some segments do drag and make the whole thing feel like a long TV episode, and some plot setups can feel a bit hollow, but it’s a pretty relatable and trippy children's story, regardless.

3. Miguel Wants to Fight (2023)

Miguel Wants to Fight is as straightforward as its title. It has the energy of an early 2000s hijinks teen comedy, complete with (almost) parentless scenes and hypothetical fight scenes. At times, it also feels like a nostalgic action film as it makes homages to the same era. But while those aspects work well, the film goes nowhere thematically. There's no reason to think that fighting would solve Miguel's problems, and they ultimately don't. And any discussion about why people in the neighborhood resort to violence (mistreatment of minorities, toxic masculinity, or as a rite of passage for respect) never finds its way into the script.

4. The Machine, 2023

The Machine wants us to assume many unlikely things, with Bert Kreischer’s global fame being the most improbable. It also wants to be both high stakes as we follow Bert and his father (Mark Hamill) being chased by the mafia and comedic as they make lighthearted jokes along the way. But it never really achieves that balance. Though it looks sleek and high-budgeted, its contents are lopsided and messy, not once hitting the mark on its many targets. Moreover, it's based on a premise so thin, that it loses all credibility midway through the film. After that, it simply becomes a parody of itself. To be sure, there are some noteworthy moments in between, like when Kreischer and Hamill share genuine father-and-son moments, but for the most part, it’s just too overbearing to warrant anyone’s attention.
