3 Best Movies to Watch by Tasuku Hatanaka

Unlike plenty of time torn films, Maboroshi is the kind of film that doesn’t have a straightforward explanation for the town of Mifuse standing still in time. But even when it doesn’t have a logical reason, the way the film unfolds has a distinct feeling as it explores the illusions the town either could cling to, or release to grow. This kind of storytelling would be familiar to fans of the prolific screenwriter Mari Okada, who just started directing in 2018 with Maquia: When the Promised Flower Blooms, but even those new to her work would appreciate the pure emotion driving Maboroshi, if they can let go of reality and enjoy MAPPA’s exquisite art for a moment.

2. A Sign of Affection, 2024

With its slice-of-life approach, A Sign of Affection immediately tugs at the heartstrings with its sweet romance between a deaf university student and a multilingual traveller from manga duo Suu Morishita. The anime adaptation sees the world in Yuki’s eyes, with delicately lined shapes and pink-tinted watercolor paired with Sumire Morohoshi’s sweet voice, and it’s lovely to see the unjaded, kind way she interprets the world. The series does have some of the familiar romance tropes, like love triangles, wingman friends, and the glowy, bokeh lighting, but it’s sort of the point in this charming show. A Sign of Affection likens the careful, hesitant way of falling in love with the way Yuki interacts with the world, or rather, the reactions abled people have to her disability.

Being bitten by a zombie is quite troublesome, but more so if you happen not to turn completely into the creature, keeping human sanity while still trying not to succumb to the creature’s hunger. While this premise isn’t totally original, we haven’t seen this in a steampunk version of Japan, where their successful industrial revolution and urbanification has been halted due to the zombies, named as Kabane here. It’s an interesting end to the alternate history franchise, made much more exciting with bloody fight scenes and intriguing reimaginings of the country, but viewers new to the franchise would be going in blind, and would likely be puzzled with the inconsistency and pacing.Genre: Action, Animation, Drama, Science Fiction
