Oscar-winner Emerald Fennell got a lot of free reign with her debut, Promising Young Woman, which was a slightly modest ordeal even with a lead of Carrey Mulligan's calibre. But now, with her sophomore film, she go to have some fun. Assembling a devout cast of particularly skilled actors—Barry Keoghan, Jacob Elordi, Rosamund Pike, and Mulligan again—seems like an obvious decision, but the mix of them all is unlike anything we've seen before. A class satire, a psychological thriller, and a psychosexual drama, Saltburn is high class entertainment, with a snappy script, and many tricks up its sleeve. Brace yourselves for some bath-action, grave-action, and full-moon-menstrual-action and many other scenes you may have not ever pictured shown on the screen. Actually, it's impossible to prepare for a film like this one, but being open certainly helps digest the shock and provocations that are there for you to behold.

It's no fun being plus-sized—or at least, that's the message that we get everywhere, from tragic documentaries to self-help articles to shows that make weight the butt of every joke. Fat people are often perceived as inactive and sad and stubborn when those aren't mutually exclusive with one's size. In fact, there's nothing inherently wrong with being big.

In Shrill, our plus-sized hero Annie (played by the lovable Aidy Bryant) knocks down all those lazy myths with her sharp wit and buoyant charm. She goes on everyday adventures that prove she can be just as delightful (and exasperating) as any witty millennial writer trying to make it big in her city. Annie isn't perfect, but the fun lies in seeing her grow (not transform) into a better person.

Is this the most thrilling head-scratcher we’ve seen in a while? No. Is it a rousing take on the feminist cause? Not really. 5. The Franchise, 2024

	
The Franchise is a funny enough spoof attacking the oversized production and interest surrounding big-budget movies and their never-ending sequels. Marvel is the most obvious target (the studio in the show is named Maximum), but it more generally aims at an industry that puts profit and exploitation before art and wellness. In that regard, it doesn’t feel as sharp or fresh as it should be. Many other shows, from The Comeback to Episodes, have already given us their darkly funny behind-the-scenes take on Hollywood with much more depth and nuance. And making fun of Marvel, at this point, feels overdone—everyone, even the most rabid fan, is in superhero fatigue mode. Still, The Franchise makes for an entertaining watch. Daniel Brühl, playing the eccentric auteur Eric, and Billy Magnussen, playing the airhead lead Tecto, are especially funny, while Patel and Adefope are the easiest to follow and relate to. It’s never laugh-out-loud hilarious or profoundly thought-provoking. But it is an accurate and amusing spoof, one that could (and hopefully) grow into itself in the following seasons.Genre: Comedy
