2. Rough Diamonds, 2023

At first glance, Rough Diamonds seems to be a standard Netflix thriller with debts, deaths, and dirty deals. However, this Flemish-Yiddish series happens to also be a compelling family drama, centered around Antwerp’s Haredi Jewish diamond community. The series starts the season strong with the death that puts the family into chaos. It continues the series’ suspense with the return of prodigal son Noah, who, like Godfather’s Michael Corleone, initially disagrees with the family’s orthodox lifestyle, but can’t help but be drawn back to the family business. As the family scrambles to figure out their dead brother’s debt, they squabble with each other in a dynamic reminiscent of Succession, with an added organized crime twist. The resulting mix creates an intriguing thriller series that also happens to be a nuanced portrayal of a rarely portrayed community.

3. Inside, 2023

Inside is a technical wonder and a fascinating vehicle for Dafoe’s character Nemo, who holds the entire thing together with a singularly insane performance. It also poses interesting questions about art, namely, what value does it hold at the end of the day? When you’re seconds away from dying of hunger and thirst, what good is a painting, a sculpture, a sketch? Are they really only as good as what they’re materially made out of or can they contribute something more? Inside plays with these questions, but unfortunately, not in any engaging, thoughtful, or creative way. The movie stretches on and on, recycling the same ideas and leaning on the inevitably disgusting ways humans survive as a crutch. An argument could be made that that is the point, to reveal the emptiness and dullness of expensive art, but Inside tries so hard to capture that feeling that it becomes the thing it critiques in the end.

4. High Tides, 2023

The lives of affluent teenagers tend to be entertaining fodder used in plenty of shows, as their privilege, inexperience, and spending power allow them to go into some crazy situations. High Tides is one of those shows, set in the Belgian seaside town of Knokke, where working class Daan bumps into and captures the attention of rich high school couple Louise and Alex. The show definitely goes into a lot of the familiar soapy melodrama, with drugs, alcohol, and terrible parents driving them to teenage antics, but it does so through stunning visuals and a talented cast that makes the inane plot decent enough to watch. The show is nothing new, but for viewers into soapy teenage dramas, High Tides might be up your alley.
