Spectrum TV Stream Explained: Plans, Pricing, Channels

With Spectrum scrapping its once-popular Essentials plan, Spectrum TV Stream is now the cheapest cord-cutting plan that the internet provider offers. But with that price comes a few limitations. Unlike Spectrum TV Choice, Spectrum TV Stream has no local and sports channels and very limited DVR options. On the upside, however, it has more than 90 cable channels, many of them popular ones including AMC, TCM, and Disney to cover the entertainment front, CNN and Fox to cover the news front, and MTV and VH1 to cover the music front. Since it's pretty new, there's little known about Spectrum TV Stream, so we called up a sales agent to learn more about the TV plan and listed all of what we know so far below.

  • Price: $39.99 per month
  • Channels: 90 cable channels including Disney, Fox, CNN, and TCM
  • How to sign up: You can subscribe via the Spectrum TV app

Who can get Spectrum TV Stream?

Unlike Spectrum TV Choice, which is available to anyone in a serviceable area, Spectrum TV Stream is only available to Spectrum Internet users. If you have a different internet provider, then you have no way of availing TV Stream.

How much does Spectrum TV Stream cost?

Spectrum TV Stream costs $39.99, but that excludes the one-time activation fee, which costs $30, and the tax fee, which can go from $1 to $4 depending on where you live. All in, TV Stream can cost you more than $70 on your first month, then less than $45 every succeeding month. For reference, Philo offers a similar channel lineup for $25/month. Sling Orange also costs the same ($40/month), but it notably has sports channels on top of news and entertainment.

Are local and sports channels available on Spectrum TV Stream?

No, they're not. If you're after local and sports coverage, you should check Spectrum's other plans, like TV Choice. You can also opt to tack on Spectrum Stream Latino for an extra fee to get Spanish-language sports channels like TUDN and beIN Sports. These plans will cost you more, but you prefer the diversity and flexibility they offer. TV Stream's lineup is slimmer, but it prides itself on offering top cable channels.

Can you change the channels you watch on Spectrum TV Stream?

No. Unlike TV Choice, TV Stream has a fixed set of channels. However, you can bundle Spectrum TV Stream with Spectrum Stream Latino for an extra $25/month. The add-on includes channels like Univision, Telemundo, beIN Sports en Español, TUDN, and Discovery en Español.

How do you subscribe to Spectrum TV Stream?

You can subscribe via the Spectrum Streaming app, or you can also call Spectrum Charter or visit a branch.

What is the difference between Spectrum TV Stream, Spectrum TV Essentials, and Spectrum TV Choice?

At just $30/month, TV Essentials used to be the cheapest TV plan Spectrum offered, until they scrapped it and replaced it with TV Stream. TV Stream and TV Choice are your main options now. The former is cheaper and leaner as it only carries the most popular cable channels, while the latter is costlier but boasts local and sports channels.

Do I need to have Spectrum Internet to get Spectrum TV Stream?

Yes. Spectrum TV Stream is only available to those with an existing Spectrum Internet plan. If Spectrum doesn't cover your area, then you can't get Spectrum TV Stream.

Does Spectrum TV Stream come with cloud DVR?

No, though we suspect you won't need it too much since TV Stream doesn't carry sports channels. If you already have a Xumo device, however, then you could record shows using that.

What is Xumo and do I need it to get Spectrum TV Stream?

Xumo is Spectrum's stream box, and it's offered to Spectrum users who want even more viewing options than what the plans offer. That said, it's not a requirement when subscribing to Spectrum TV Stream.

Is Spectrum TV Stream compatible with all streaming devices?

It works on major streaming devices like Apple TV and Roku, but according to the Spectrum agent we spoke to on the phone, there are a couple of devices Spectrum TV Stream doesn't gel with. Those include old Samsung TVs, Sony TVs, Amazon Fire TVs, and PlayStation 4.

Does Spectrum TV Stream have a trial period?

When asked about a free trial, the Spectrum agent only mentioned Spectrum's 30-day money-back guarantee, which you can read more about here. We recommend reading the terms extra carefully, as customers have reported some difficulties when applying for it.
